Microsoft Office 97 was a major milestone release of Microsoft Office, which included hundreds of new features and improvements, introduced "Command Bars", a paradigm in which menus and toolbars were made more similar in capability and visual design featured natural language systems and sophisticated grammar checking. It was published on CD-ROM as well as on a set of 44 3½-inch floppy disks, and became Y2K safe with Service Release 2. Released on November 19, 1996,^[1]it was the last version to support Windows NT 3.51 on i386 and Alpha (only Word and Excel were available for the Alpha). Two service releases (SR-1 and SR-2) were released for Office 97.^[2]

Microsoft Office 97 is notable as the first version of Office to feature the Office Assistant, a feature initially designed to assist users by the way of an interactive animated character, which interfaced with the Office help content. The default assistant wasClippit, nicknamed Clippy, a paperclip. The office assistant feature would continue to be available in Office versions up until and including Microsoft Office 2003. In Office XP the feature was hidden by default and not installed by default in Office 2003.

Office 97 is also notable for being the first Microsoft product to include product activation. The Brazilian versions of Office 97 Small Business Edition and Publisher 98 required it.^[3]

Microsoft Word 97 contained a hidden pinball game and Microsoft Excel contained a hidden flight simulator.^[4][5]

Assisted support options and security updates for Office 97 ended on January 16, 2004. Mainstream hotfix support for Office 97 ended on August 31, 2001. Extended hotfix support ended on February 28, 2002.^[6]

AOMEI PartitionAssistantManager

Many people prefer to use a standalone disk management utility instead of the Windows Disk Manager for resizing and moving partitions, formatting disks, and other critical tasks. Until recently, most such tools have been premium software, but Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition is a full-featured freeware disk management utility that can even be used commercially, which is great news for home and small businesses.

It can create, convert, hide, format, delete, wipe, resize, copy, split, merge, and move partitions, including altering existing partitions without data loss or corruption, on hard drives, flash drives, and similar storage devices. It works in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Partition Assistant's blue tones, linear disk capacity displays, and toolbar make it a good fit for Office and similar suites, and the left-hand navigation panel and full menus not only display the program's features but make it a cinch to access them. Partition Assistant displayed our system's three physical disks (SSD, HDD, and USB) as well as each disk's partitions. We selected a nearly empty 140GB partition on our 2.5-inch hard drive and started by changing the drive letter and label, moving on to various formatting, resizing, and splitting options.

Since this drive only held an out-of-date backup, we weren't worried about reformatting and resizing it, but Partition Assistant didn't lose any data that we didn't deliberately overwrite by reformatting the disk. One especially useful feature is the ability to hide partitions. Many users like to "overprovision" their SSDs by partitioning off a percentage of the capacity to prevent all the drive's memory cells from filling. Hiding the partition makes it easy to keep from using it accidentally. Partition Wizard also has three Wizards to handle important jobs: Extend Partition, Disk Copy, and Partition Copy. The Partition Copy Wizard let us specify Quick Copy, which only copies the used space, and Sector-by-Sector, which copies the entire partition structure to a new disk.

Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition would seem to be the most powerful and capable freeware disk partition utility we've tried. It's highly recommended for all users, and especially those with multidisk systems.

ArdamaxKeylogger + Cack

The best thing about this monitoring program is the initial Quick Tour screen. From there, things go downhill quickly.

Ardamax Keylogger is easy to install and a helpful Quick Tour page appears immediately afterward. This page consists of a field to enter test text and brief instructions for viewing the log and placing the program into hidden mode through the tray icon. As promised, the interface was brought up by double-clicking the tray icon and the test text appeared. That was the last text or any data that the program recorded. The interface is somewhat utilitarian but easy to understand. There's a log showing date, time, user, application name, and windows title. A viewing pane displays selected content. There are several options to filter the logs. A toolbar holds only a few buttons to choose the log (screenshots, keystrokes, Web, and chat), but no options to start or stop monitoring. A File menu offers the same log options and two options to choose the language and see About information. The system tray icon holds more settings, including adding a password and sending the program into stealth mode.

There are major problems with this supposedly secret monitoring program. It doesn't monitor and it isn't hidden. If you need to find out what others are doing on your computer, you'll need to find a more effective program.
